A guide to Hebden Bridge from people who have lived and worked here
Hebden Bridge is a former mill town in the Calder Valley with about 4,000 people and significantly more independent shops, cafés and gig venues than you'd expect for its size. It's a 30-minute train from Manchester, 45 minutes from Leeds, and surrounded by some of the best walking country in the north of England.
This is where we eat, drink, walk and pass our weekends.
Coin
Natural wine, small plates, classic cocktails. Our first booking when we have visitors.
Marcos Pizza
Authentic, affordable Italian pizza. Genuinely the best slice in the valley.
Fredericks
Wood-fired pizza, craft beer and a great wine list, in a converted Todmorden building. Booking recommended.
Nelson's
A cool below-ground winebar and social dining venue with a strong veggie/vegan focus.
Duke Street Food
Scratch-cooked, regionally sourced takeaway delivered to the door. Perfect for nights in.
Fox & Goose
Community-owned, real-ale, fire-in-winter. An award-winning pub with cosy interior and secluded terraced garden space.

Walks from the door
-
A gentle wooded valley walk along the Hebden Water, finishing at the National Trust's Gibson Mill (café, toilets, tea cake). About 2 hours at a walking pace. Mostly flat with a few uneven sections. Bring a lead, the National Trust requires it on the estate paths.
-
Up the cobbled "Buttress" path to Heptonstall village, around the churchyard (where Sylvia Plath is buried), and back down via the wooded "Eaves Wood" path. About 90 minutes. The uphill is brisk but worth it for the view.
-
A classic Pennine route. Climb from the town up through Callis Wood to the 121-foot monument on Stoodley Pike, which dominates the skyline. Big views of the Calder Valley and, on a clear day, the Peak District edge.
-
Gentle farmland and moor paths leading to the dramatic Lumb Falls, a natural plunge pool beneath an old packhorse bridge. Great for a summer dip or picnic. Starts near Nutclough Tavern or Old Town.
-
Flat and peaceful, following the canal past locks, mills and wildlife. You can catch the train or bus back from Todmorden. Perfect for families, cyclists, or an easy leg-stretch before breakfast
